The Trans-Tasman Endodontic Conference 2010 will provide a stimulating and educational experience for delegates. The speakers will be sharing their extensive experience and knowledge with you over the two and half days of the Conference.
The Organising Committee is pleased to announce they have secured the following speakers:
topKeynote Speakers
Dr Stanley F. Malamed
University of Southern California School of Dentistry in Los Angeles, California, USA
Doctor Malamed was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, graduating from the New York University College of Dentistry in 1969. He then completed a dental internship and residency in anesthesiology at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in the Bronx, New York before serving for 2 years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. In 1973, Doctor Malamed joined the faculty of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, in Los Angeles, where today he is Professor of Anesthesia & Medicine. Dr. Malamed is a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology, as well as a recipient of the Heidebrink Award [1996] from the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the Horace Wells Award from the International Federation of Dental Anesthesia Societies, 1997 (IFDAS).
Doctor Malamed has authored more than 135 scientific papers and 17 chapters in various medical and dental journals and textbooks in the areas of physical evaluation, emergency medicine, local anesthesia, sedation and general anesthesia. In addition, Dr. Malamed is the author of three widely used textbooks, published by CV Mosby: Handbook of Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office (6th edition 2007); Handbook of Local Anesthesia (5th edition 2004); and Sedation - a guide to patient management (5th edition 2010) and two interactive DVD’s: Emergency Medicine (2nd edition, 2008) and Malamed’s Local Anesthetic Technique DVD (2004) In his spare time, Doctor Malamed is an avid runner, exercise enthusiast, and admits an addiction to the New York Times crossword puzzle, which he has done daily since his freshman year in dental school
Dr Asgeir Sigurdsson
University College London Eastman Dental Institute in London, England, UK
Asgeir Sigurdsson was born and raised in Iceland. He graduated with cand. odont. (DDS) degree from University of Iceland in 1988 and in 1992 he received a MS degree and certificate in endodontics from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He became immediately after graduation a fulltime faculty member in the Department of Endodontics at UNC. He served as the Graduate Director of the UNC Endodontic specialty program from 1997 to 2004. Currently he is in private endodontic practice in Iceland and UK and is an Adjunctive Associate Professor at UNC and Honorary Clinical Teacher in Endodontology, UCL Eastman Dental Institute, London UK.
He is active in many professional organizations and is the Immediate Past President of the International Association of Dental Traumatology. Dr Sigurdsson has lectured in over 30 countries and has written and/or co-written 12 chapters on endodontics, pain perception and dental trauma and authored over 50 refereed articles on similar subjects.

Professor Harold Messer
Harold Messer is professor emeritus in the Melbourne Dental School, and was previously Professor of Restorative Dentistry in the same school. In his retirement he has been a visiting professor in both Singapore and Thailand. During a long career he has published almost 200 papers and book chapters, and supervised close to 50 Masters candidates in Endodontics and 17 PhDs. More than 20 of his former students have gone on to full-time academic careers. His research interests have covered many areas of Endodontics, with a strong focus on restoration of root-filled teeth.
Professor Robert Love
Robert Love is Head of the Department of Oral Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences, and Head of Discipline (Endodontics) at the University of Otago School of Dentistry. He practices and teaches endodontics and is actively involved in endodontic research. He has published extensively with his main area of research being the mechanisms involved in bacterial invasion of dentine. He has been involved in numerous professional organizations including President and Editor NZ Endodontic Society, President NZ Section ANZ Division IADR, President Otago Branch NZ Dental Association, and Councillor Asia Pacific Endodontic Confederation. He previously held the position of Scientific Editor of the NZ Dental Journal, and is on the Editorial Boards of Dental Traumatology, International Endodontic Journal, European Journal of Dentistry, and Scientific Boards of the Journal of Endodontics and the Australian Endodontic Journal. Robert is Chair of the Dental Council of New Zealand. He has lectured and presented courses in New Zealand, Australia, Asia, USA, and Europe.
Dr Paul Heijkoop
Dr. Paul Heijkoop B.D.S., M.D.S., F.R.A.C.D.S., F.P.F.A.
He completed his specialty training in 1989 and has been a Specialist Endodontist, practicing in Adelaide since 1990. He has been a visiting specialist consultant to the Adelaide Dental Hospital and has also been heavily involved in endodontic teaching at both the undergraduate and post-graduate level. He is a member of several endodontic societies, and has been the president of the ASE S.A. branch and president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists. He has lectured on endodontic topics both locally and internationally and has had a particular interest in digital radiography. His energies are now concentrated on private specialist practice which he has conducted since 1990. He is a keen traveller and enjoys some spare time tending a small patch of vines in the Adelaide Hills.
Associate Professor Hedley Coleman
Hedley Coleman BDS, BChD (Honours), MDent, FCPath (SA), FFOP (RCPA)
Graduated with distinction as a dentist in 1985 from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. After spending time in the medical services and in private general dental practice he completed a Masters Degree in the Branch of Oral Pathology in 1992. Since 1993, he had been in part-time academic and private pathology practice in Johannesburg. In 2003 he obtained a Fellowship from the South African College of Pathologists and in 2007 fulfilled the examination requirements for the FFOP (RCPA). He presently holds a conjoint appointment as Associate Professor with the ICPMR, Westmead Hospital and the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney.
Professor Paul V. Abbott
BDSc, MDS, FRACDS(Endo), FPFA, FADI, FICD, FACD
Prof. Paul Abbott is the Winthrop Professor of Clinical Dentistry at The University of Western Australia where he is the Director of Postgraduate Studies and Research. He also co-ordinates and teaches both the undergraduate and postgraduate endodontic training programmes at UWA.
Prof. Abbott is a Specialist Endodontist and he works in a private practice on a part-time basis. He has lectured extensively with over 580 presentations in 32 countries. He has published over 80 scientific articles in refereed dental journals, contributed to 11 chapters to textbooks and serves on the Editorial Boards and Scientific Review Committees of 15 international dental journals.
Prof. Abbott is currently the Immediate Past President of the International Federation of Endodontic Associations (IFEA). In 2004, he was awarded the University of Western Australia's Excellence in Teaching Award.
Associate Professor Elizabeth Martin
BDS (Hons), MDS, PhD, FRACDS, FICD
Liz Martin is an Associate Professor within the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney and is currently Discipline Head for Tooth Conservation and responsible for the clinical training of students in the final two years of the BDent program. She also maintains one day of general practice per week for the Australian Defence Force.
She has presented over 150 lectures to the profession covering a range of topics including bonding, dental caries, light curing, and restorative dentistry. She also has extensive teaching experience in the undergraduate program in clinical restorative dentistry with senior dental students.
Her areas of research interest include biomaterials research, molecular analysis of infection in advanced caries, diagnostic indicators for the conservative therapy of dentinal caries, saliva testing and dental caries, and the antimicrobial potential of glass ionomer cements.
Dr Michelle Heffernan
Dr. Michelle Heffernan is the Head of Discipline of Endodontics at the University of Sydney. She also provides surgical and non-surgical endodontic treatment for patients in her private practice, BMA House Endodontists, on Macquarie Street in Sydney. Dr. Heffernan's dental career started at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA, where she obtained a degree in dental hygiene and then her dental degree.
Dr. Heffernan obtained her Masters Degree in Endodontics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Prior to relocating to Sydney, she practiced in a private endodontic practice in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA.
Dr. Heffernan is a prominent lecturer and clinical educator in Australia. She has given numerous lectures in the USA and Australia. Over the last three years, Dr. Heffernan has implemented rotary endodontics and the use of microscopes to the student clinics at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney.
Associate Professor Peter Cathro
Upon completion of his MDS in Endodontics (1994), Peter worked in full time specialist practice in Melbourne and then in Auckland. Peter later took a position as a Senior Lecturer at Otago University (New Zealand). In addition to teaching undergraduates and post-graduates, Peter has lectured extensively at national and FDI conference levels and given numerous endodontic hands-on courses throughout New Zealand, Australia and Asia. Peter is currently Head of Discipline (Endodontics) at The University of Adelaide, and maintains an Endodontic private practice. He enjoys road & mountain biking and spending time with friends and family, especially over some of the fruits of South Australia.
Dr John J Stropko
Dr. John J. Stropko received his DDS from Indiana University in 1964 and practiced Restorative Dentistry for the next 24 years. In 1989, he received a Certificate for Endodontics, from Dr. Herbert Schilder at Boston University and enjoyed private practice, limited to Endodontics, during the following 18 years. He is an internationally recognized authority on conventional and surgical Micro-Endodontics. Dr. Stropko has been a visiting clinical instructor at PERF; an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Boston University; an Assistant Professor of Graduate Clinical Endodontics at Loma Linda University; and was on the endodontic faculty at the Scottsdale Center of Dentistry, in charge of Micro-Surgery. He is the inventor of the Stropko Irrigator, has published in numerous journals, is an internationally known speaker, and is a co-founder of Clinical Endodontic Seminars. Dr. Stropko wrote the Micro-Surgical chapter in Arnaldo Castellucci's new textbook, "Endodontics". Over the past two decades, Dr. Stropko has performed numerous live MicroEndodontic and MicroSurgical demonstrations. John and his wife, Barbara, currently reside in Prescott, AZ.
Professor Paul Monsour
Professor Paul Monsour graduated from the University of Queensland in 1978 with a BDSc (hons). He completed a PhD in Oral Biology in 1987 and a Masters degree in Oral Radiology & Pathology in 1991. Professor Monsour was the first registered specialist in Oral & Maxillofacial radiology working in full time private practice on the East coast of Australia. Professor Monsour lectures extensively throughout Australia on all aspects of DMF radiology. Appointed the foundation Professor of DMFR at the University of Queensland in 2009. Paul is an associate member of the RANZCR and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
Assistant Professor Gary Bouloux
Assistant Professor Bouloux is full-time faculty and Director of Research within the division of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta USA. He obtained his dental degree from Sydney University and his medical degree from Emory University. He has completed residency at Westmead Hospital Australia and fellowships in temporomandibular joint surgery and orthognathic surgery at Emory University. He is board certified with the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has a clinical interest in temporomandibular joint disorders, trauma and pathology including bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of the jaws.

topCPD Tracking Points
The Dental Board of Australia’s new National Registration standards have now been implemented. From 1 July 2010 all dental practitioners in Australia are required to meet CPD requirements set by the Dental Board. Start accruing your CPD Points now by attending this year’s Trans-Tasman Endodontic Conference.
Australian Practitioners are required to complete 60 hours for CPD in a 3 year period. Full Conference attendance at the Trans-Tasman Endodontic Conference will accrue approximately 17.5 hours towards your required hours!
The Conference is also accredited for 17.5 hours with the New Zealand Dental Association.
